Somersett Homes for Sale (by price range)

Introduction to Somersett:
I recently heard some pretty impressive stories about a fairly new housing development in Northwest Reno Called “Somersett.” My curiosity was piqued, and I decided to investigate a little further. I got a catalog and from what I saw in print, Somersett seemed like more than a place to call home; Somersett seemed like a place to really live!
I decided to see if what I saw in print actually matched reality, so I got in the car and drove out to Somersett. Wow! There are features at Somersett that didn’t even make it into the catalog! I’m talking about the things that cannot even be put into words, like the panoramic view of the mountains, for starters. Let me explain what discoveries unfolded in my adventure.
First of all, the closer I got to the little village called Somersett, the more serenity I sensed. I saw more birds, breathed fresher air, and basked in the wonder of wide, open spaces all around me. As is common in the Reno area, to the west were mountains covered with Evergreens, and to the east the hills were bare. There was even a view to the north which I thought was interesting: a hill with just a few trees on it, right in the middle of a hill, surrounded by the desert! Each view is gorgeous in the early morning and evenings, when the sun is rising, or setting. Although traffic got a little heavier the further I traveled (just a little!), the peace did not leave.
Somsersett Communities
As I approached Somersett, I noticed that it is divided into seven communities, with one that is a little more geared toward retired folks, which I will go into in more detail a little further down the line. Each community has its own amenities; some are the same, and others are completely unique. They all have their own clubhouse. Let's look at each community individually:
To start off, Talon Pointe by Ryder Homes is located right next to the 9th fairway of the Championship Golf Course! The homes in this gated community have already been built, and pricing begins in the mid $300,000 range. There are four different floor plans ranging from 1,910 to 2,531 square feet. Most of the Talon Pointe homes have spectacular views of mountains and fairways, and all have been built with great craftsmanship.
Next, is Sonterra, by Toll Brothers. This development is still under construction, so anybody purchasing a home here, can customize it to suit their individual tastes!
Mountain Crest is also a developing community.
Can all this really be beat? Of course, housing is the main concern, so let me discuss the rest of the communities, and housing that is offered.
The Somerset Estates are also a community by Ryder Homes, that have large lots. Choose from two separate floor plans at either 3,000 or 3,300 square feet. The prices start at $495,000. Homes in The Vue community were built by Pulte Homes, and are roomy, between 1,787 and 2,769 square feet.
Del Webb Community:
Finally, I would like to discuss The Sierra Canyon community by Del Webb. This community largely consists of retired people, and although it is laid back, it still bustles with activity. These homes are still under construction, and are just about ready to go! When I went into a completed three bedroom model, I felt at home right away. It was 2,600 square feet, and had a price tag of $495,000. (All homes by Del Webb are between 1,200 and 2,600 square feet.)
As soon as I walked in the door there was a hallway to the left, with two bedrooms. Separating the bedrooms was a bathroom and nice sized linen closet.
The kitchen had an island in the center, and all the amenities a modern kitchen should have: an oven, a built in microwave oven, a refrigerator was soon to be put in. It had ample drawers and cupboards made from dark cherry wood, not to mention a large pantry. It was gorgeous! A cook's dream!
The home included a spacious laundry room, next to a large den, but I'm especially eager to tell about the master bedroom. Just as I walked in bedroom door, the realtor showed me a sitting room that was nearly the size of the den! There was plenty of room for a King Sized bed, with plenty of room left over for furniture! The master bath was larger than the den itself, with a spa tub, a separate shower, and a room just off to the side with a commode in it.
The best part of that house though, in my opinion, was not only the gas fireplace for cozy Fall and Winter nights, but gigantic windows to the west that yielded a perfect view of the Sierras! That said it all to me! But everybody has different tastes. Perhaps it's the immaculate kitchen, with tile counter tops that would pamper the chef who wants to cook in style, that would draw some. Or, maybe it's the spacious, hardwood floors, or the size of the master bedroom! Maybe it's the spa bathtub! Or maybe the peace and quiet, or the immaculate clubhouse that would draw others to this community! People have to see it for themselves, and find out what entices them most!
It may be the clubhouse alone which would inspire some to never leave the Sierra Canyon community! It had the Sierra Room, which is a room for social gatherings; a ladies ping pong club meets in this room, as well. Across the hall is a room for art classes and mens' poker, and the room right next to that has two pool tables. The great room is a homey room, comprised of comfortable chairs and couches, a computer, and a big screen T.V.
The clubhouse also has a walking track, weight room, swimming pool, library/lounge area. The weight room is next to the great room on the main floor, while the walking track, swimming pool and library are on the second floor. It is easy for all to access, either by taking the stairs or elevator!
Somersett Club at Town Center
One of the most impressive features is The Town Square, and it lies right in the center of the Somersett communities. In this small area is nearly everything anybody could want, right at their fingertips! Stores, shops, offices, and the list goes on! The clubhouse sports a swimming pool with a 98 foot water slide! It has other amenities, too, such as an indoor basketball court and tennis court! There is a weight room, and an aerobics studio, a cardio-weight center, locker rooms with a sauna and massage, adult and family spas, snack bar, Kids' and teens' clubs, art studio with a ceramics kiln, and even a great room with a community stage!
In addition to the above, the construction of the Somersett Town Square was overseen by LEED (Leadership in Energy and Efficiency Design). The building has energy efficient and water saving features, including a state of the art heating and cooling system. Low Voc paints were used, and the building contains solatube lighting. Construction materials were recycled.
The Club is located at Town Center, which is still under construction, but when it's finished will offer loads of recreation and fun; and for the serious golfer, it includes the Somersett Country Club, featuring an 18 hole golf course on 7,252 yards, with five tee options for golfers at all skill levels! Plans for a restaurant, lounge, locker rooms, boardrooms, and of course a golf shop are also underway.
A paved, natural, 27 mile trail system that will surround the community for hiking and biking, and will connect to the neighborhood parks and Town Center, is in the works. There is also a community web-based network.
Somersett Schools
One thing I have not discussed yet is the schools in the area. Somersett is both an adult and family community, with some of the best schools in Reno located nearby! When discussing the schools, I should start at the beginning: Just a couple of miles from the Somersett community is the Goddard School for ages 6 weeks to 6 years. I passed this school on my way up to Somersett, and it is a small, cheerful building bustling with activity.
Located on Ambassador Dr. is George Westergard Elementary School. George Westergard is a school for students in Kindergarten through sixth grades, and has a rather impressive Reading Buddy program for students who struggle in this area. Westergard students experiencing difficulty in reading are paired up with tutors from McQueen High School and the University of Nevada, Reno (U.N.R.), for extra help.
All of the staff at Westergard are involved in the P.T.A., along with 95% of the parents. The teachers at Westergard are highly qualified, with 74% of them holding a master's degree or above. All students receive at least one half hour a week of computer use, that is tied to curriculum instruction. Westergard also offers students a full music program. The average class size at Westergard is 23, and the student-faculty ratio is 22:1.
Billinghurst Middle School

Billinghurst Is comprised of students in seventh and eighth grades. The average class size at Billinghurst is 34, with a student-faculty ratio of 20:1. Billinghurst sports strong music, speech and debate, and drama programs. There is also a strong athletic program at Billinghurst, which includes basketball, volleyball, and wrestling. After school programs are also available.
McQueen High School

Mcqueen Is known for graduating students who have earned awards in academics, athletics, and the arts! Students at McQueen typically score above national and state averages in SAT and ACT scores. There are college prep and honors programs, along with music, art, theater, and speech and debate. There are three computer labs and a foreign language program. Students are able to participate in football, basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, volleyball, track and field, skiing, golf, tennis, and a rifle team. Parental and community support in McQueen High School is strong.
Finally, for college students, nearby U.N.R. is easily accessable.
There are also a number of private schools in Reno, including Sage Ridge, a college prepatory school; Bishop-Manogue, which is a Catholic high school; and Marvin Piccolo Elementary school for students with severe mental and physical handicaps, for students aged three to twenty-two years.
So, you see, Somersett has it all! Don't just take my word for it, come and see for yourself!
